Actriz de cine estadounidense. Trabajó como bailarina en Broadway, y en The Pajama Game (1954) tras sustituir a una actriz lesionada, fue descubierta por un productor, lo que la llevó a debutar en el cine en Pero ¿quién mató a Harry? (1955) de Alfred Hitchcock. Conocida por sus hábiles retratos de personajes encantadoramente excéntricos, más tarde interpretó roles cómicos y dramáticos en Como un torrente (1959), El apartamento (1960), Irma la dulce (1963), Noches en la ciudad (1969), Paso decisivo (1977), La fuerza del cariño (1983, premio de la Academia), Madame Sousatzka (1988) y Con cariño desde el cielo (1996). También escribió varios best sellers, que a menudo trataban sobre sus experiencias místicas, como Bailando en la luz (1983) y Dentro de mí (1989). Es hermana de Warren Beatty.
